The method of using a small part of something to represent the whole. Sampling is used in a wide range of scientific contexts, from testing a blood sample to diagnose a disease, to exploring the surface of Mars. Sampling is commonly used to study the distribution of organisms in a habitat. One method involves using frames called quadrants to mark out small, randomly selected areas. Only things inside the frames are counted. These figures are then scaled up to give an estimate for the entire area.
