A recessive allele is the version of a gene that will only be expressed if two copies are present, one from each set of chromosomes. In humans, the allele for blue eyes, for example, is recessive. So an individual only has blue eyes if they inherit the blue allele from both their mother and father. One brown and one blue allele produce a brown eyed individual.
