A diagram used to represent the number of individual organisms occupying each feeding level of a food chain. Usually, there are progressively fewer organisms at higher levels, giving the diagram a pyramid shape. However, other shapes are also possible. Here, a single tree provides food for thousands of insects, which in turn support a smaller number of birds.
