A predator species is one that kills and eats other organisms for food. Non-predator species may still consume other organisms – for example, scavengers feed off dead animals and parasites feed off their hosts – but by definition predators capture and kill live prey. A predator species can also be prey – for example, sardines may prey on phytoplankton, but are themselves hunted by dolphins and sharks.
