A chemical reaction caused by the absorption of light. Photochemical reactions are a key part of photosynthesis, the process by which green plants make sugars out of carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis takes place in structures called chloroplasts, which absorb light particles known as photons, and use the energy to split water molecules. The hydrogen atoms are then combined with carbon dioxide to produce sugars that can be stored in the plant’s leaves, stem and roots.
