The tube-like tissue in plants that carries nutrients, including sugar and proteins, from cells in which they are made to where they are needed elsewhere in the plant. Phloem contains several types of cell, some arranged in columns with sieve-like ends that allow molecules to pass to the adjacent cell, and so move up and down the column. Phloem allows nutrients to flow in both directions.
