A type of bone cell.
A type of bone cell. Osteocytes begin life as cells called osteoblasts, which secrete minerals that build the bone matrix. Eventually, they become surrounded by this matrix. Like other bone cells, osteocytes do not undergo cell division to create new cells, but they do recycle bone by constantly dissolving and re-excreting bone matter.
