The combining of genetic material from two variations within a species, or of different species, to create a hybrid individual. This happens naturally, as well as artificially via deliberate breeding programmes. Tigers and lions can interbreed, for example, to produce hybrids called tigons and ligers. Plants hybridise more frequently than animals, and are more likely to produce fertile hybrids.
