A series of reactions, each the result of a preceding reaction. One type of chain reaction is a nuclear chain reaction, which occurs when a neutron is fired at an atom, causing it to split and release more neutrons. This is called nuclear fission. The neutrons then collide with other atoms, causing them to split and release neutrons. And so it continues, releasing huge amounts of energy. Controlled chain reactions are used to generate electricity in nuclear power stations, while uncontrolled chain reactions give nuclear weapons their immense destructive power.
