The female part of a flowering plant, consisting of the ovaries, ovules, a stalk-like tube called the style, and its sticky surface called the stigma. Carpels are found at the centre of the flowering part of a plant. They vary considerably in form, from a single carpel, for example in avocado, to multiple unfused carpels, such as strawberries, to multiple fused carpels, like the tulip.
