A small gas burner commonly used in laboratories for heating and sterilising. Its simple, safe and robust design allows flammable gas, usually methane, to be mixed with air at the base before it is ignited at the top. Opening the air hole allows more oxygen in, to produce a hot, blue flame. Closing the hole results in less efficient combustion and produces a cooler, yellow flame.
