Very simple organisms that can photosynthesise like plants but do not have complex features such as roots, stems or leaves. A diverse group, algae can be single celled or multicellular. Algae provide much of Earth's oxygen, are the foundation of the food chain for almost all aquatic life, and are an important source of industrial products, including petroleum products.
