- He did so by grading the affects of wind - at Beaufort Force 0 the sea is calm, at Beaufort Scale 12 houses and buildings are destroyed.
- At Beaufort Scale 2, breeze can be felt on the skin, at Beaufort Scale 6 the sea is choppy and it is hard to use an umbrella!
- Recently, Beaufort's Scale has been extended to Force 17 - for extremely violent storms.
